Sometimes referred to as one of the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain is the sixth largest freshwater lake in the United States. The lake has approximately 587 miles of shoreline stretching 120 miles from its southern most point near Whitehall, New York to its outlet into the Richelieu River in Quebec. It is 11.2 miles across at its widest point, and has 440 square miles of surface area. The deepest part of the lake is close to 400 feet. It forms the border between the Adirondack Mountains of New York State and the Green Mountains of Vermont.
